Emergency Medicine Fellowship Training Program

The Emergency Medicine Fellowship Training Program is based at Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters in Norfolk, Virginia. Children's Hospital is the only pediatric tertiary care facility serving a referral population in excess of 1.5 million. Thus, the institution provides a broad range of primary, secondary and tertiary care services to a variety of patients.

Our fellowship program offers four major kinds of experiences: clinical, teaching, administrative and research. Our state-of-the-art Emergency Department serves approximately 40,000 patients each year. It is staffed primarily by pediatric residents, supplemented by emergency medicine and family practice residents on regular rotations. Supervision is provided by full-time Pediatric Emergency Medicine faculty and fellows. Surgeons and subspecialists are readily available for consultation.

Curriculum

Teaching Training and Experience

A major component involves supervising and teaching residents and students in the Emergency Department. Fellows receive specific instruction in lecture design and delivery, and participate as speakers in a variety of formal and informal settings. Multiple opportunities exist for improving teaching skills.

Administrative Training

Fellows learn the principles of administration in biweekly administrative meetings and by involvement in the day-to-day operations of the emergency department.

Research Training and Experience

Formal teaching on principles of epidemiology, statistics, and study design and methodology provides fellows with a framework for understanding clinical research. With faculty supervision, fellows are expected to design and execute one or more independent research projects and are encouraged to participate in additional investigations.
